Driving like almost a hundred years ago
08/21/2017
The car is started by hand crank. The journey leads over a narrow pass road, over gravel and stones. The tunnel is unlit and the uphill and downhill gradients take their toll on the technology. We drive downhill in low gear to protect the brakes and avoid going too fast. This is exactly how driving was around a hundred years ago.
And that's probably exactly how it felt again yesterday, when around two dozen pre-war sports cars drove over the Kunkelspass, which leads from Vättis in the Tamina Valley to Tamins in the Rhine Valley. At an altitude of 1357 meters, it is not actually one of the really big passes, but the narrow and steep road is not suitable for caravans, and it is even recommended that it should only be used by off-road vehicles.
Normally, cars are not allowed to drive through, but special permits can be obtained. The pass road is particularly popular with mountain bikers and hikers.
But yesterday was an exception for once and the participants of the "Amilcar Suisse Grisons 2017" weekend were allowed to test their vehicles on the difficult stretch of road.
This went off without a hitch and the photos that were taken are reminiscent of the days when driving was just like this.
We will be telling you more about the event and the vehicles soon.
