British Leyland was not doing well in 1980. In 1980, employees had to be warned that the company would soon be forced to lay off half of its workforce of up to 60,000 workers or only employ them for half of the time.
BL's vehicles sold poorly at the time; Austin Princess and Morris Marina were not exactly among the top sellers, and the market share had fallen to just 15 percent, the lowest it had ever been. Accordingly, unsold vehicles were piling up around the factory in Cowley and other locations. Things were not looking good for British Leyland (and the British car industry) at the time ...
