This also used to be part of everyday life - serious accidents

Over the last 20 or 30 years, cars have become significantly heavier and larger. Some of this is due to modern comfort requirements and performance expectations. However, some of this additional weight has also been added for safety precautions, i.e. crumple zones, stable passenger compartments, side impact protection, pedestrian protection, etc.
You really realize this when you look at accident pictures from the past. The Mini pictured above offered hardly any survival protection for its passengers, who probably had little, if any, chance of surviving this tragedy without permanent damage. A modern car would look much more intact after a similar accident. And thanks to protective devices such as airbags, three-point seat belts, etc., the occupants would have had a better chance.
Unfortunately, accidents are as much a part of our daily lives today as they were back then, but the statistics clearly show that the roads have become much safer today thanks to all the technology, despite a considerable increase in sales over the years - thanks to technical progress.
Because most classic car drivers know this, they drive their old cars carefully and with foresight. That's a good thing!
