The big reckoning with Scottsdale/Arizona - Part 1 - the "losers"

Now they are over, the three big auctions in Scottsdale/Arizona. Bonhams, RM and Gooding alone sold almost 300 cars, and the sales rates were generally high at around 90%. So only a few cars were left standing, just under 40 to be precise. And it was rather the expensive ones that did not meet the high expectations, as their average estimated value was around USD 1.3 million.
Although the bids were very high in many cases, the owners were clearly not prepared to part with four Mercedes Benz 300 SLs, two Ferrari 275 GTBs, two Dino 246 GT/GTSs or a Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7, to name just a few examples.
Among the unsold cars are a few exotics such as the Bugatti EB 110 GT from 1993, the Dual-Ghia Convertible from 1958 or the Toyota 2000 GT, but the majority of the vehicles are the kind you come across at auctions time and again.
Only time will tell whether the owners have actually "lost out" because their cars have not been sold. If prices continue to rise, then we will probably see some of these vehicles at auction again in a few months or even years and the estimated values may then be another 20% or so higher. Who knows ...
