Start of the 86th Mille Miglia
05/16/2013
The 86th Mille Miglia and the 36th Mille Miglia Storico start today, Thursday. On March 26, 1927, 77 vehicles prepared for the 1000-mile route, but today around 400 well-rested teams with their spick and span rarities will be sent on the 1600km journey.
On the way, they will be enthusiastically cheered on by numerous fans, just like back then. The top league of historic automobile construction meets in Brescia and sets off on the first stage towards Ferrara.
The Mille Miglia, probably the most important road race of all time, is still perhaps the most important event of the year as a historic occasion, together with the Goodwood Revival.
Jochen Mass once said: "There are few events on earth with as much character as the Mille Miglia".
Of course, this event is associated with a gigantic expense for the participants. Only a few can afford to take part. Not only is the price almost on a par with that of a new small car, but the logistics are also associated with high financial and personnel costs.
The Mille Miglia, with its 1600 km from Brescia to Rome and back, is today, as it was 85 years ago, a battle between man and machine. Only seriously prepared cars will see the finish line after three days. In between, some teams will reach their limits.
The new organizing team "1000 Miglia srl", founded on 4 June 2012, wants to give the event a new face this year. We are excited! Behind it is no stranger, but the Automobile Club of Brescia, which already organized the traditional race from 1927-1957. The 2013 event will be dedicated to the winner of 1950 and 53 Giannino Marzotto.
Last year's severe earthquake, which destroyed much of the historical heritage in the area of the road race shortly after the event, should not be forgotten.
Zwischengas wishes all participants in this year's Mille every success!
A report on the events with pictures and impressions will follow in a few days.
