Car racing tracks - boom in the sixties
02/24/2013
In the mid-sixties,slot car racingwas booming in Europe . Young and old alike were fascinated by the fast side-by-side driving on winding tracks. Cars on a scale of 1:32 or even 1:24 completed their laps quickly and together with 3, 5 or even 7 other competitors, held by a guide rudder in a longitudinal slot in the race track.
The professional tracks were often elaborately carved from the solid, but there were also starter packs with pieces of track that could be plugged together for the next generation; Scalextric, Fleischmann, Märklin, Carrera, Faller, etc. offered racetracks in various sizes and price categories.
After interest waned in the eighties and nineties, car racing tracks enjoyed a resurgence in modern times.
P.S. Our archive picture shows the opening of a professional racetrack in Bern in 1966. The inaugural race was driven by eight ladies in sporty overalls.
