Anyone who thinks that narrow parking spaces are exclusively a problem of our time should take a look at the picture above, taken in a Swiss city in 1961.
While today it is mostly over-wide SUVs or large sedans that make it difficult to get out of the car next to them, in 1961, when affordable vehicles were still in the 1.4 meter width range, it was generously designed American sedans, but other countries also produced large vehicles.
The problem at the end of the day remains the same, parking spaces don't breathe and don't get bigger by themselves over the years, whereas the automotive industry likes to add a few centimeters with every model change.
