This advertisement, in which Carolus, the writing and dining table for the car, is offered, comes from a different era. The advertisement from 1961 also shows how it was used - with a typewriter and coffee pot.
Yes, this was still possible in the days before the passenger airbag, but given the limited space available in earlier cars, it probably wasn't really efficient and comfortable back then either ....
