Those were still men - with the American-La France at the Monte Carlo Challenge 1993
In 1993, Edy Schorno and Hansjörg Elmiger from Schwyz took part in the Monte Carlo Challenge in an ALF (American-La France, built around 1910) and almost finished as winners. They started in Prague at minus 20 degrees. Of course, this car does not have a roof. But full-face helmets were the only concession the modern era made to the weather conditions.
In the photo from 1996, however, Roman Schlömmer, then Edy Schorno's partner, is sitting at the wheel, taken on the Col de la Fayolle.
Back to Elmiger: he took part in the official Monte Carlo Rally in a Ford Escort back in 1979. Today, Edy Schorno is a well-known restorer in the classic car scene. Schorno and Elmiger were real tough guys, both 100% driver types, and it wasn't just the snowstorm that raged here and there, but also the battle for the steering wheel and for personal best times on the SS "on board". The two almost won this challenge against all the "comfort things" equipped with heaters, roofs and "trip and twin", but they fell back a few places when a special stage was canceled due to difficult snow conditions.
