... the infinitely variable front suspension works This is an overhead view with certain sections cut away to show the simple, operating mechanism. As the wheel rises or falls, so the wheel carrier arm twists and untwists the torsion bar, the stresses travelling along to the end of the bar and then back along the tube. In the suspension housing is a precompressed coil spring, acting upon a toggle lever, which softens the suspension for normal riding and has the effect o f progress ively stiffening it as wheel movement increases. / R ID IN G COM FORT With Vauxhall Independent Front Wheel Springing A lmost any car can be made to look and feel comfortable when it is stationary. But the real test o f motoring comfort is riding comfort, in particular suspension. Every Vauxhall has independent front wheel springing, the modern suspension system which is now fitted to practically every luxury car the world over. With independent springing the wheels are no longer connected by a solid front axle; they are free to rise and fall independently of one another (see top left). There is considerably less “unsprung” weight than with conventional springing and the steering gear and linkage can be mounted on the frame.
