... aeronautics, stressedskin construction ... In motoring, Vauxhall Integral Design ... Stressed skin construction enables modern aircraft to carry bigger loads over greater distances at higher speeds. As the name implies, the metal skin forming the surfaces of the wings and the fuselage is stressed—that is, it carries the load. Nontechnically, this simply means that the stressed skin not only covers, but also forms the structure of the aeroplane. The principle behind the integralbuilt Vauxhall is similar to that o f the stressed skin aeroplane; the body is designed not only to “cover” or enclose the car, but also to provide the main structure. There is no separate chassis frame, “chassis” and “body” are designed and built as an integral, allsteel unit. “Chassis” strength comes just as much from the steel roof as it does from the steel floor. The entire unit is “engineered”, by which we mean that the stresses are carefully calculated, and every section plays a part in strengthening the structure. Integral design has two enormous advantages. Not only does it give increased strength, but at the same time it saves weight. As every motorist knows, this saving in weight brings immense benefits in acceleration, topgear performance and petrol economy. Other advantages of integral design lie in its welded allsteel construction. Squeaks and rattles develop ...
