Is the Volkswagen Car Museum Foundation parting with some of the silverware?
Shortly after the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum spent millions on disposing of around a dozen of its treasures in order to focus on its core themes, the Volkswagen Automuseum Foundation is doing something similar.
However, the Wolfsburg rarities will not be quite as expensive as the racing cars from the USA; after all, Volkswagen is dealing with comparatively normal cars such as the VW Passat, VW Vento, VW Type 3 Variant, VW 412 LE Variant, VW Bus, VW LT 31 or VW Type 3 LE.
However, there is also a VW Golf III VR6 syncro from 1995, a VW Scirocco GT from 1987 and a Shanghai SH760B from 1988, which is probably very rare in this country, up for auction.
Volkswagen is cautious when it comes to condition grades, with none of the cars scoring below 2-3, but almost half above 4. The estimated values are correspondingly conservative at between 400 and 5000 euros.
You can bid on site or by email until April 15, 2025, but an inspection at the Volkswagen Automuseum should be helpful.
We believe that there should still be a lot to be done with the cars if an enthusiast can decide to do so.
All in all, the museum's large collection is unlikely to suffer as a result of the disposals; this auction is obviously mainly used to sort out duplicates and cars that cannot be restored in a commercially viable way. The fact that the cars are being auctioned off in this way makes sense and is probably much more honest and sympathetic than simply handing the vehicles over to a dealer.
