Swedes Anders Kulläng and Lillebror Nasenius, on the other hand, had to compete in the 1973 Monte Carlo Rally with a three-speed automatic transmission - because their team boss wanted to prove to the world "that these things are really durable".
In fact, the pair even managed to finish in 12th and 23rd place, leaving an Alpine A 110, a Ford Escort RS 1600 and a BMW 2002 TI behind them. Kulläng even considered the automatic to be superior in motorsport because you can shift gears with your foot as well as your hand - or not at all. Let's just take his word for it.
