Boost for classic car magazines?
10/15/2012
Our colleague H.J. Götzl, editor-in-chief of Motor Klassik, is delighted. In his latest editorial, he reports on a contribution to the discussion by the German media portal Meedia, which puts forward a counter-thesis, so to speak, to the often-argued death of print titles. Stefan Winerbauer from Meedia believes that print magazines and traditional daily newspapers could become a status symbol. And he names 15 candidates with potential lifestyle statement potential, one of which is Motor Klassik, which gives Götzl a double reason to be happy.
Of course, we don't begrudge Götzl and his team this, as we enjoy reading "MK" ourselves, and we liked "the old test" on the Fiat 850 and the service story "Mit dem Klasiker durch Schnee und Eis". And we are also happy to give Götzl a helping hand again, as we did recently on the Gaisberg when we pushed the 908 on him, because we see the printed classic car magazines as comrades-in-arms in our fight for the future of the classic car.
Incidentally, it is also interesting to note in the Meedia article that the frequently voiced disadvantages of the print product (production costs, distribution costs, complexity in production, lack of topicality) and thus also the considerable costs could support precisely this status symbol character, because you can be seen with a FAZ or RAMP just like with an expensive watch ...
For the sake of completeness, we would like to list the other titles for which Meedia promises a "rosy" future, namely Beef, brand eins, The Economist, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Halali (a hunting magazine), Intelligent Life (life style magazine), Neue Zürcher Zeitung, Psychologie heute, Ramp (garish automobile magazine), Ride (mountain bike magazine from Switzerland), Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin, Wired, Die Zeit, 11 Freunde (football magazine). Of course, we don't know exactly how this selection came about and it is likely to give rise to many hearty discussions.
And what is perhaps less palatable for our colleague Götzl is the fact that this week he has also gained a new competitor in the form of the German licensed edition of Octane . We have reported on this.
