From England to Arosa
09/08/2011
The English are a very special people, especially fans of old cars. Not only do they have a sense of tradition, they also have a full-blown collector's instinct. Hardly any other nation has such alively classic car scene as England.
The fact that the English also like the Swiss mountains is also nothing new. So it almost goes without saying that a group of 14 English car enthusiasts signed up for this year's Arosa hill climb. And, of course, they arrived on the road, as they should, at least in part.
In a Grand Prix car without a trunk, the luggage has to be stored in an unconventional way.
The group makes a stopover in Meilen over lunchtime. The classic cars, including a Talbot 105 Alpine Tourer 1394, an Alfa Romeo 6C 2300, an Alfa Romeo P3, a Frazer Nash Sebring and a three-wheeled Morgan Super Aero from 1929, attract many passers-by and interested parties, who inspect the vehicles while the Englishmen enjoy a small aperitif.
Before continuing the journey, the fuel supply has to be checked (with a stick) ....
... then the engines can be started for the onward journey (note the visible moving parts on the valve train!).
Finally, it's off to the ferry and an Alfa Romeo P3 also has to wait.
But soon everything is loaded and the boat takes us to the other side of the lake ...
... and from there on the highway towards Chur ...
... and for the English there is a wonderful panorama to see.
