... The three main bearings are of large diameter and are housed within the webs of the crankcase. The crankshaft is carefully balanced. Separate camshafts are used for exhaust and inlet valves, the inlet camshaft having high lift cams. The shafts are driven by a train of helical gears at the front of the engine and a double intermediate gear is used. Three bearings support the camshafts, the front and rear being of phosphorbronze, the centre bearing running in the cylinder block. The shafts are hollow for lubrication by force feed to the bearings. VALVES. Placed overhead and actuated by short push rods, made possible by mounting the camshaft high up in the cylinder block. The valves are opposed at 90 degrees and in combination with the hemispherical combustion chambers of the cylinder head, the straightthrough inlet ports of large diameter and high lift cams promote maxi mum efficiency and power output at all speeds. LUBRICATION. Force feed by a gear type centrifugal pump, driven by means of a vertical shaft from the centre of the inlet camshaft to all main bearings, bigends, and overhead valve gear. The pump is submerged in oil in a specially large sump which is baffled to prevent surging : the capacity of the sump is 8g pints. An oil filter through which the oil passes before distribution, enclosed in a ribbed elektron container which is ...
