... already existed many, many years ago, as this photo from 1956 (!) proves.
The symbolized traffic light with recommended speeds was located in Düsseldorf at the time and was used to test the effectiveness of variable speed limits (30, 40, 50 km/h) on expressways.
However, the primary aim at the time was not to prevent traffic jams, but to improve traffic flow and reduce the number of accidents.
In principle, the aim was to make it easier for drivers to approach or pass the next traffic light in the best possible way. This was stated in a detailed report in Automobil Revue at the time .
