A two-stroke for the rough stuff
07/03/2016
In 1953, Auto Union launched the DKW 91 with a three-cylinder two-stroke engine and now significantly increased engine power. With front-wheel drive and comparatively low weight, the car also became a serious contender in rally competitions.
To make the car suitable for winter rallies, a few additional handles were fitted at the front and rear. This made it possible to hold on to the car if you had to stand on the bumpers at the front or rear to optimize the weight.
Of course, a few additional lights were also fitted.
And an additional windshield was fitted as a wind and stone deflector to protect against stones and air.
Equipped in this way, the DKW F91 made a good impression at the Monte Carlo Rally, but also in many other competitions, winning categories in a row.
The "special class", as the car was also known, was also very competitive in slaloms and on the circuit.
Incidentally, the DKW F91 "Monte Carlo" was on display yesterday at the Rallye Historique on the occasion of the Schloss Bensberg Classic, driven by Thomas Frank, Head of Audi Tradition.
A detailed report on the rally and the Concours will soon be published on Zwischengas.
