Minimalism pays off
07/02/2016
A Porsche has never been more minimalist. Compared to the 911 R, a Carrera RS was downright luxurious.
Of course, Plexiglas windows were used instead of glass.
But even the rear lights were replaced by light lamps and whatever else could be left out, was left out.
Instead, it was given more power, 210 hp to be precise, which was produced by the Carrera 6 engine. And they had no trouble with the 800 kg sports car.
For greater and, above all, more numerous sports successes, homologation and thus 500 units would have been necessary. But Porsche could not imagine that they would be able to find buyers. So it remained with 19 examples, which today are worth many times the purchase price at the time and were in fact almost unaffordable.
The 500 cars could certainly have been sold, but it wasn't until 1972 that the 2.7-liter Carrera RS gave them the courage to do so.
And today? The larger series of the 911 R has now been built, based on the current 991, but it's not quite the same ...
The fast, particularly sporty Porsche models - 911 R, Carrera RS 2.7, Carrera 3.0 RS, 964 RSR 3.8, GT 2 RS and 911/991 R - can be seen at the Schloss Bensberg Classic in the Schlosspark. But only until Sunday (July 3, 2016).
