The growth in size of modern cars is rarely seen so clearly.
But when an (original) Austin Mini stands right next to a modern (BMW) Mini, it becomes almost like a toy. It's hard to believe that the English classic could accommodate four people and even leave some space for luggage. The fact that at 3.054 meters long and 1.397 meters wide, there wasn't much room left for crumple zones and side impact protection devices, as in the modern Mini, is more likely. The kerb weight of 617 kg became around 1.1 tons, but an original Mini had neither air conditioning, nor a navigation system or a collection of airbags.
Incidentally, most Mini generation comparisons forget that between the original Mini and the BMW Mini there was also the Mini Metro with an unladen weight of around 730 kg and larger dimensions. And there was also the MG Metro 6R4 rally version with over 400 hp and all-wheel drive. Despite the turbocharger, the modern Mini would have to dress warmly ...
