Classic pearls of the future - Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione
09/12/2014
You don't need a crystal ball or any special clairvoyant abilities to predict that the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione will become a sought-after classic. It is simply too beautiful and too desirable for that. And it is also rare, as only 500 coupés and the same number of convertibles were built.
Technically, the 8C was based on the Maserati Coupé, which was built from 2001 to 2007. In the Alfa, however, the engine may have around 400 cm3 more and produce an impressive 450 hp. However, almost more important than the horsepower are the noises that the Alfa Romeo makes. 160,000 euros was the asking price for the 8C in coupé form, which was produced from 2007 onwards, while the Spider cost over 210,000 euros. Incidentally, the body was always made of plastic.
Since then, market prices have gone down and then up again, depending on whether things were going well or badly for the bankers.
The design by Wolfgang Egger, head of Alfa Romeo's Centro Stile, refers to the Alfa Romeo 33 of the 1960s, but also to the Giulia Tubolare Zagato a few years earlier. It is definitely a success and it will be exciting to see whether the coupés, the last of which left the production plant in 2009, will be seen as more valuable in the future than the open-top versions that were built until 2010.
