Wide wheels even back then
09/11/2014
Nowadays, big wheels with wide tires are the be-all and end-all if you want a special vehicle. But even around 30 years ago, a lot could be achieved with thick tires.
Frank Burback from Cologne, for example, wanted to drive his Toyota Tercel 4WD across the English Channel in 1985 and enter the Guinness Book of Records.
However, the technology thwarted his plans after just a quarter of an hour. Although he had made his Toyota buoyant by sealing the engine and fitting 2.2 meter wheels, the semi-axle obviously could not withstand the load.
At the time, Burback promised to return and break the record after all. We don't know whether he succeeded. But we were impressed by the fat tires on the Tercel.
