Classic pearl of the future - Toyota Supra Turbo
02/23/2014
It's probably already too late. If you don't yet have a well-preserved, original Toyota Supra Turbo (Mk IV) in your garage, you're unlikely to be able to get your hands on one for a reasonable price that has neither been permanently modified nor circumnavigated the globe many times. The car's popularity in the tuning scene was not least due to its use in the movie "The Fast and the Furious" (driven by Paul Walker).
The rounded sports car was built from 1993 to 2002, but vehicles were only officially delivered to Europe until 1996. With the fourth generation of the Supra, the company had finally set itself apart from the Celica and set its sights on the super sports car segment. The purchase price in Germany was DM 110,000 (Targa), in Switzerland you could get the Coupé for 88,900 and the Targa for 90,900.
The most powerful version was equipped with an inline six-cylinder engine with 2997 cm3 and twin turbo, which produced 330 hp. However, at around 1.5 tons, the Supra was not a lightweight. Nevertheless, the intelligent twin-turbo approach resulted in excellent elasticity values. Both manual and automatic versions could be ordered.
The chassis was also state-of-the-art, with double wishbones at the front and a combination of wishbones and double wishbones at the rear.
However, the aerodynamics package, which was still prohibited at the start of sales in Switzerland, was something very special. A huge rear spoiler provided downforce and stability at higher speeds. It was mandatory in combination with an active front spoiler, which automatically extended at 90 km/h and retracted under the front apron below 70 km/h.
The number of Supras delivered in our latitudes remained manageable, and they were therefore rarely seen on the road. Today, they are rarer than many a Ferrari of the nineties. Many fans see the Supra Mk IV as the legitimate successor to the GT 2000, which should actually secure it classic status ...
