Extra train to Le Mans
06/16/2012
This was also possible in the past: a special train directly from Zurich to the "24h du Mans" and back! There was still room for this at the end of the 60s.
Today, special trains are only used for football matches or perhaps occasionally for big concerts. But certainly not for car races.
Today, public transport would rather have its carriages demolished by football fans than attempt to run an extra train to Le Mans, Monaco, Monza or anywhere else.
A good 40 years ago, people hoped in vain for a more than deserved victory for the great Swiss driver Jo Siffert in a Porsche, but today Switzerland has a real winner in Marcel Fässler. He won the legendary race in 2011 in an Audi, the year before he was only narrowly beaten and this year he and his colleagues are attempting the hat-trick of a second overall victory. The chances are good, the Audi is still the measure of all things, while Peugeot bowed out a few weeks ago and Toyota's strength has yet to be demonstrated in the "long run".
In any case, we wish Marcel Fässler every success and keep both fingers crossed for him.
