Voilà, a car - Test Goggomobil
In 1955, hobby tester Günther Gebhardt received the new Goggomobil and was told to break it. He did not succeed, on the contrary, he was really enthusiastic about the little car. The refreshed test almost summarizes the findings and shows some pictures of the interior of the Goggomobil.
With the Goggomobil, Glas perfectly captured the spirit of the times. The car was small and could also be driven with a motorcycle license due to its small displacement. However, the most important thing for buyers at the time was probably that the Goggomobil looked and drove like a fully-fledged car. This made the small car very popular not only in Germany, but throughout Europe. This report describes the history of the Goggomobil and its special features, illustrated with historical pictures and sales literature from the time.
The "big" Goggomobil was one of the big surprises at the IAA 1957 in Frankfurt. The still young car manufacturer Glas was launching its second coup and the experts applauded. However, it turned out that the new model was presented somewhat prematurely and was also put into series production a little too early - now with rear-wheel drive instead of front-wheel drive. This not only damaged its reputation, but also its market opportunities, which is why the Glas Isar T600/T700 was only built for a good six years. This vehicle report describes the history of this now very rare model and shows it in many historical illustrations and in the sales literature.
With the Goggomobil T 600 (and T 700), the Glas company presented a modern small car design at the IAA in 1957. Series production began just one year later and hobby tester Gebhardt was able to test one of the first vehicles produced. He was enthusiastic, even though he could not foresee the teething troubles that were to cost Hans Glas GmbH a lot of money. In 1959, Glas presented the Goggomobil Isar S35 Coupé on its stand at the IAA. The magazine 'hobby' was given the opportunity to test a pre-production vehicle and was very positive about the small sports car with its good handling. Unfortunately, the Isar S35 never made it into series production, so this test report has a special historical value. Few small sports cars in its price range turned out as pretty and attractive as the Goggomobil Dart by Australian Bill Buckle. The mechanics of the German Goggomobil T300/T400 were concealed under the doorless polyester body. Following the success of the Goggo scooter, the Glas company began to build a four-wheeled compact automobile with motorcycle genes, the Goggomobil. This became a great success, thanks to low production and maintenance costs combined with good driving performance and comfort attributes. Heinz Kranz from the magazine 'hobby' was one of the first to test drive the new Glas Coupé S 1004. He had actually intended to give the pre-production vehicle a thorough thrashing, but in the end he had to admit that the Dingolfingen-based company had put a really good car on its wheels. Hans Glas GmbH presented a sensation at the 1963 IAA with the Glas 1300 GT. Breathtakingly beautiful and powered by modern engine technology, the Glas coupé had what it took to give the competition a run for its money. However, the coupé, which was soon followed by a convertible and more powerful versions, did not manage to save the Glas brand, despite its outstanding facilities. The Glas 1204 would actually have had the makings of a superstar. Four seats, a coupé body and an extremely powerful engine would have been a recipe for success. In the beginning was the sports car. True to this motto, many manufacturers produced sporty two-door models that had a "teaser" function. If the response from buyers was satisfactory, a more practical version was then launched with the aim of achieving high sales figures. In 1963, Hans Glas GmbH in Lower Bavaria did exactly the same when it followed up the S1004 with the S 1204. The temperament of its predecessor was by no means lost, nor were the not inconsiderable quirks... A real sensation - glass 1500
The Glas brand, which was taken over by BMW in the mid-sixties, was once an influential player in the German car market. Models such as the Goggomobil and the Glas 1300 GT were coveted and popular. The Glas 1500 saloon was also a good success - an all-round successful mid-range car. It was so good, in fact, that the hobby tester wrote in the highest terms (and even in Bavarian dialect). The Glas GT could have given the English sports cars a run for their money. However, it was almost too well and too luxuriously equipped for that and correspondingly expensive. In terms of handling and, above all, driving pleasure, however, it was in no way inferior to the British. The sedan was completely different: more powerful and more comfortable, it was more of a fast highway car than a cornering predator. This historical test report shows very well how different two cars with basically the same engine can be.
At the 1965 Geneva Motor Show, Pietro Frua presented a one-off that would certainly have appealed to both social and sporty Glas drivers, but which never made it into series production. Frua took on the development of the presumably lost prototype at his own risk ...
Although it was not the first German eight-cylinder of the post-war era - that honor goes to the unforgotten BMW 502 - it was by far the cheapest. The recipe is quite simple: take two 1.3-liter four-cylinder engines with overhead camshafts, put them on a common crankcase... and the V8 is ready. Advertised with a popular price and dressed in Italian chic, it was supposed to turn the heads of the masses. But things turned out differently and the elegant glass eight-cylinder was not a success. This article goes back to its creation and describes its remarkable characteristics, illustrated by many pictures from then and now.
The abbreviation "TS" stands for "Touring Sport", i.e. for a car suitable for both touring and racing. With the Glas 1700 TS, however, the emphasis was clearly on the first half of the word. Its elastic engine and comfortable chassis made it an excellent fast touring car. High revs and tight bends, on the other hand, were less its métier. Nevertheless, this historical test report was impressed by the 100 hp saloon.
In 1967, an extremely elegant coupé with a BMW kidney grille was on display at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt, but the car did not come from the Munich manufacturer. The four-seater, which was technically based on the Glas 3000 V8 Coupé, was built by Pietro Frua himself with the idea of securing orders from BMW. Although this was not successful, the car survived and a special design element, known as the "evil eye", has characterized BMW vehicles right up to the present day. The Glas V8 coupé was intended to be cheaper than the competition from Italy and Germany and at the same time support the young Glas car company's drive to move "upmarket". A completely new car with a V8 engine and Italian-influenced bodywork by Pietro Frua placed the car in sight of Maserati and other GT brands. But there was a lack of money and stamina. No more than 800 examples were built between 1965 and 1968. This extensively illustrated driving report shows how this rarity drives and what there is to know about it.
