Memories of a Geneva Motor Show
12/16/2025
It was probably towards the end of the seventies when I visited the Geneva Motor Show as a youngster and came across the Triumph Spitfire. It was a late model, the Spitfire 1500, and I can still remember exactly how thrilled I was. In contrast to many expensive cars, the doors of the less expensive roadster were open and invited me to try it out. I was thrilled by the precision of the gearshift with its short travel, even though I couldn't drive a single meter.
I can no longer say whether the car was white, like the one that the Touring Garage in Oberweningen is currently offering for an affordable price and in good condition. But it is possible. And anyway, I am still thrilled every time I get to drive a Spitfire.
In times when BMW sets the price for the entry-level model of the mid-range iX3 in Switzerland at around CHF 78,000 (EUR 68,900 in Germany), the CHF 12,900 that a brand-new Triumph Spitfire cost back then sounds truly idyllic. And the fact that the Touring Garage's well-aged example doesn't cost that much more makes the compact roadster with its super-small turning circle (see our driving report ) even more appealing.
