Divided opinions on the sunroof (question of the month)
11/03/2025
In the seventies and eighties, they were among the most popular retrofit products for cars. Countless roofs were cut open and fitted with a sunroof. Today, these retrofit roofs are viewed somewhat more ambivalently and some people consider removing the roof and restoring it to its original condition, especially as some retrofit sunroofs have also suffered visually or even let water into the interior.
We wanted to know from Zwischengas readers what they think about retrofitted sunroofs and whether they would remove them again. The " question of the month" was accordingly: Should retrofit sunroofs be removed?
Of the more than 320 readers who took part in the question of the month, not quite half (43.3%) were in favor of leaving the roofs in, as they are, after all, useful contemporary accessories.
The other half (52.9 %) could imagine removing them, although the majority (39.6 % in absolute terms) would only do so if the glass roof was not period-compliant and the removal could be done without huge expense. However, 13.3 % (absolute) would definitely remove the roof, after all, the car should look as it did when it was delivered.
And 3.7% couldn't do anything with any of the options, perhaps because they only have a convertible anyway or because there were also factory-compatible retrofit roofs.
Summed up differently, one could also have said that over 80% would leave the roofs that were once fitted in place if they did not detract from the contemporary look.
Graphically evaluated, the answers look like this:
