Baby seeks new sponsor - Steyr 55 restoration object
Between 1936 and 1940, the Austrian car manufacturer Steyr built the 50/55 model. Around 13,000 examples were produced, most of which have been lost to time and only a few have survived.
One of these rare Steyr vehicles, which the people called "Baby", can now be purchased from a courageous restorer. The type 55 car had been stored dry in a barn in Moravia/Czech Republic for 19 years and was in a sorry state at the time. A complete restoration was planned.
Now the owner wants to pass on the restoration project due to other priorities.
In November 2013, the baby was "unearthed" and made ready for transportation and rolling again.
The inventory revealed: the body is complete but in poor condition, it is badly rusted through in the sill area and the floor panel in the passenger footwell and rear area is also dilapidated.
The sunroof is functional, an Austrian type certificate and the type plate are present. The car also comes with a workshop repair book.
Anyone embarking on the restoration project should allow for extensive sheet metal work. But Karl Jenschke's design, which was also considered an Austrian Volkswagen, is certainly worth saving.

The car will be on public display and offered for sale at the latest at the classic car show in Tulln on May 24 and 25, 2014. A viewing can also be arranged in Moravia beforehand for impatient interested parties.
