The "European" Ford Mustang from Bertone
Although the Ford Mustang hit like a bomb in the USA, Ford managers were not entirely satisfied with its success, particularly because the response in Europe was less euphoric.
Impressed by Nuccio Bertone's designs, Ford decided to give Bertone the chance to create a European-style Mustang. This was given a rolling chassis and conjured up an exceptionally pretty coupé (his 100th design) with typical Bertone insignia. The interior was also Europeanized and featured classic round instruments and lots of leather. The lines were reminiscent of the later Fiat Dino Coupé, except for the rear window and the front design.
The result convinced the Ford makers and the car was exhibited at the New York Motor Show in 1965. However, nothing more came of it. Too bad, the car was attractive. Whether a Mustang in a tuxedo would have sold, however, is another question. The whereabouts of the one-off are unclear.
