New cars have to be tested, usually on public roads. If a manufacturer wants to prevent such test drives from leading to premature premiere announcements in the press, the test cars are camouflaged and referred to as"prototypes". This was already practiced in the 1960s, albeit with less effort and creativity than today.
The car shown above is of course easily recognizable as a Mercedes-Benz /8 (W115) , despite the altered front and lack of brand decoration. However, it must be said that this is of course also easy because the end product (see below) is already known.
