Gaisbergrennen 2011 - the journey
06/02/2011
This weekend, more precisely this Thursday to Saturday, June 2 to 4, 2011, the Gaisberg Race will take place. This is an event for classic cars and goes back to the historic, internationally renowned Gaisergrennen, which was held between 1929 and 1933, and from 1957 to 1969. We have published a detailed review of this event.
As a classic car event, the hill climbs were enriched with additional opportunities to compete against time and competitors.
The schedule is similar to previous years, with the administrative scrutineering taking place on Thursday at Hellbrunn Palace, a wonderful opportunity to see all the vehicles up close. This is followed by the City Grand Prix in Salzburg's city center, usually in front of many thousands of spectators. On Friday, the race continues at a sporty pace up the Gaisberg, alternating with rally-style special stages through the beautiful landscapes of Salzburgerland. On Saturday morning, the vehicles do regular laps of the Salzburgring and complete further Gaisberg runs. In between, there will be plenty of opportunities to indulge in culinary delights and to talk petrol.
But before the start is the journey. I'm actually an advocate of traveling by road, but if the distance is over 400 km and there are a lot of traffic jams to worry about, then I also grab the trailer and load up my car. That's what happened yesterday. It was still raining when I was lashing up, but then the weather gradually improved. And then, after many hours of driving and waiting (in traffic jams), the extremely friendly and courteous welcome at the Austrian hotel.
But now everything is ready for three gasoline-swilling Gaisberg days, and we will continue to report on our experiences here.
