Le Mans Legends on Saturday, June 11, 2011
06/09/2011
This weekend, the "modern" 24 Hours of Le Mans starts on Saturday at 15:00. Before that, at around 10:00 a.m., legendary cars and pilots that raced between 1947 and 1965 will drive around the Sarthe circuit in the supporting program. To get in the mood, we recommend reading our articles on Le Mans 1951 and Le Mans 1961.
For fans of historic racing, the list of vehicles will make their mouths water. It includes an HRG Le Mans Lightweight, various Frazer Nash models, Aston Martin DB2, DB3, DBR1, Project 214, DB4 GT, DB4 GT Zagato, Allard J2, Jaguar C Type, Jaguar XK120, Jaguar D Type, Lister Knobbly, Triumph TR 2, Lotus Elite, Lotus Elan 26R, Lotus Eleven, Austin Healey 100/6, Maserati 450 S, AC Ace, AC Cobra, Corvette Sting Ray, Bizzarrini 5300 GT Competizione, Shelby Mustang 350 GT, Porsche RS 61, Porsche RS60, Porsche 904-6, Ferrari 275 GTB, Ferrari 250 LM, Ferrari (Dino) 206 P, Jowett Jupiter or TVR Grantura, to name just a few of the 60 or so vehicles.
In addition to the "legendary" cars, famous Le Mans participants, including Sir Stirling Moss and David Piper, will also be at the start.
We hope that we will manage to photograph (and immortalize acoustically) a few of the vehicles and present them next week on Zwischengas. To get you in the mood, we have searched the archive for a few of the competing vehicles in original pictures from back then.
