Even rarer and less known - Intermeccanica Torino
Cars that were produced in less than 1,000 units can certainly be considered rarities. With 411 vehicles produced, the Intermeccanica Italia certainly belongs in this category. Even rarer, however, is its direct predecessor, the Intermeccanica Torino. Visually and technically, the two sports cars are identical. Only the intervention of Ford, which itself offered large-volume saloons under the name "Torino", led to the renaming of the Intermeccanica Torino to "Italia" after only 97 units had been sold. In contrast to its successor, the Torino wore its model designation proudly on its snout.
The Intermeccanica Torino/Italia was originally designed for the American market, the manufacturing company was based in Turin, hence the initial model designation. It was powered by a Ford V8 engine with 5,766 cm3 and 314 SAE hp. With its semi-self-supporting body and rigid rear axle, the vehicle had a fairly conventional structure, while the design - Scaglione is said to have had a hand in it - was modern and elegantly flowing. Manufacturer specifications set the top speed at 225 to 245 km/h and certified an acceleration time of 6.5 seconds for the sprint from 0 to 60 miles per hour for the sports car, which was quite lightweight at 1,180 kg.
