The advertisement for the VW 411 in December 1968 could have been revived 34 years later for the Phaeton with the words "Finally there is a VW over 100,000 francs" (or euros).
VW wrote at the time: "Now a VW is joining the luxury class. VW 411 is not just a new model designation, but a new VW concept. Its pacemaker: the Porsche 911."
Well, the press didn't see it quite so positively, the ADAC Motorwelt summarized its findings in four sentences:
"The VW 411 is a progressive car compared to previous Volkswagens, but in comparison with other mid-range cars it doesn't cut such a good figure. The 411 is not always stable on course, it is sensitive to crosswinds and its turning circle is too large. The engine noise is tiring? the engine power could be higher. The heating is very good, the workmanship is very clean."
However, this criticism did not prevent Volkswagen from continuing to make pithy remarks, in Europe...
... and in the United States as well.
