Many car anniversaries in 2012
01/04/2012
Like every year, we are celebrating many car anniversaries and birthdays this year.
Fifty years ago, for example, car fans were delighted with the new Alfa Romeo 2600, Alfa Romeo Giulia, Aston Martin DB4 Vantage, BWM LS Luxus, Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray (C2), Lancia Flavia Spider, Lotus Elan, Mercedes 300 SE Coupé and Cabrio, Maserati 3500 Sebring, Opel Kadett and Volkswagen 1500 Variant. However, 1962 also marked the birth of the Ferrari 250 GTO.
Exactly sixty years ago, the Fiat Otto Vu (8V) celebrated its premiere in Geneva. The new Rover 75 was presented, as was the Nash Golden Airflire and the Skoda 1200. The Ford Taunus 12M (P4) was unleashed on customers and the Borgward Hansa 1800 also celebrated its debut. But the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL has certainly also been important to this day.
Forty years ago, you could buy the Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 for the first time, as well as the Alfa Romeo Alfetta or the Alfasud. BMW presented the 5-series, Audi the Audi 80, Ford the Granada. Fiat offered the 126 as the successor to the round 500 and BMW impressed with the Turbo study, which paved the way for the much later M1 with its gullwing doors and mid-engine.
The baby Benz, the Mercedes-Benz 190/190E, was launched in 1982. The Mitsubishi Starion was also presented thirty years ago, as were the Ford Sierra and the Opel Corsa. And for the first time, it was possible to drive a 911 with the top down, in a convertible.
Twenty-five years ago, the hour of the super sports car struck, with the Porsche 959 and the Ferrari F40 offering race car-like performance for the normal driver's license holder.
And finally, 20 years ago, the Jaguar XJ-220was born. BMW introduced the new 3-series (E36). And and and ...
But there are, of course, an almost infinite number of other anniversaries and birthdays - both well-known and less significant. New cars were also introduced 100 years ago, such as the Mercedes 90 HP touring car with a pointed radiator. And Lotus is celebrating its 60th birthday as a company.
And it's not just cars that celebrate anniversaries, but also races: the 24 Hours of Le Mans, held for the 80th time, or the fiftieth running of the 24 Hours of Daytona.
The list could go on for pages, which is not the idea of a blog post. However, if we have forgotten something exceptionally important, please send us an email or a message via the contact form. Thank you very much!
