What happened to the spare wheel?

At the beginning of the 20th century, every car had one or often even two spare wheels, and for good reason.
It was only towards the end of the 1970s that folding and emergency wheels began to replace the traditional full-size spare wheels. The reason was the high weight, but above all the large volume of the normal spare wheels.
