Lost and Found: Pressure Gauge
We discovered this old manometer—an air pressure gauge—not at a traditional parts market, but in a Turkish merchant's general store. While my colleague from Zwischengas was clearing old steam engines from the storefront window, I settled for this unassuming accessory in a leather pouch for a ten-euro bill.
Further research then revealed that it is a small, period gem that is highly sought after by Porsche collectors—an original accessory from a time when monitoring tire pressure was important but not always possible.
MESSKO tire pressure gauges are extremely rare as onboard tools for the Porsche 356. A comparable classic from the 1950s is the MotoMeter model shown here, which hails from the Stuttgart region. Inside the case is a sturdy, watch-shaped metal housing with a glass window and a reset button that returns the reading to zero. Incidentally, Porsche Classic now offers this very same retro-style tire pressure gauge as an accessory.
We now have the original. A charming serendipitous find that, regardless of its value, makes the heart beat faster. A piece of automobilia with which we're upgrading the tool kit of our classic car. Living history you can touch, take with you, and use. How wonderful.
