Essential Things
No cars this time—just wine, food, and bikes.
Actually, I didn't even think this would turn out to be a real blog post. Because my mind is completely elsewhere: on bœuf bourguignon, for example, on wine from Meursault, on—even more wine from Meursault. And a pant leg that smells like two-stroke exhaust, where it was exposed to it all day yesterday—Saturday.
Last weekend, Sigrist headed west again toward Lapalisse, this time in his very first car—the good old VW bus. He loaded it up with two VéloSoleX mopeds to fulfill an old dream: tasting wine, eating, and chugging along from one wine cellar to the next on a Vélomoteur.
No sooner said than done. The two-stroke fumes are still making me a little dizzy… what? Is it the wine? Come on, we were out on the road—we know the rules. But we were on tiny little roads, really tiny ones, all by ourselves. Just the three of us. So… Now I've lost my train of thought!
Right, riding a VéloSoleX in France. It is and always will be an experience all its own—right at the bottom, so to speak, but very close to the essentials. And for me, those are: riding, an engine, and moving forward. Everything that this bike, with its 49 cubic centimeters, can deliver. It does struggle a bit when a slight incline comes into view, but the tailwind—the mechanical one—that feeling is unmistakable and goes right to the core. Just like the food in Burgundy or the wine.
Maybe I'm repeating myself here, but: La vie est belle—enjoy your Sunday!
A self-timer disaster with friends...
