Best of Show
Monterey Car Week is currently underway—its highlight is the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance on Sunday, August 16. The car that makes it all the way to “Best of Show” here—the ultimate title in the world of classic cars—will have achieved automotive apotheosis and will be inducted into the pantheon. We can’t wait to see who wins.
In a far less high-profile setting, the Zug Classic Car Award took place on Wednesday, August 12—the first under this name, but the second time at this location, after the event was held last year as a “Zurich Award in Zug exile” and as a one-time special. Zurich is no longer an option following structural changes at the old venue, whereas Zug has shown itself in the best light; thus, in the future, the “Z” will stand for the small town on Lake Zug with its long list of international corporations, rather than for the banking city on the Limmat.
Who participated, who won which category, and what other prizes were awarded isn’t the focus here. This post is about my personal “Best of Show” from that Wednesday in August.
First, a quick note: It’s not a car! It’s not even a vehicle—it’s something completely different.
Once again, the ZCCA has brought a key element of such an event to the forefront. It’s called “friendship”!
Just as diverse as the cars—as my colleague Ulli Safferling, the jury president, aptly put it in his welcome speech: From Alfa Romeo to Zagato, everything was there—and their owners are just as diverse. And yet, on this day by the lake, they all came together, exchanged the latest gossip, and made new acquaintances. What doesn’t work elsewhere—the shared focus, the shared joy across all differences—flourished here, and without any special effort.
Yes, even those who came away empty-handed this year took it in stride, placing more value on the moment than on a trophy or a red-carpet appearance.
That’s how it should be—that’s what brings joy, and that’s how you make friends, because to me, they are the true “Best of Show” at every classic car event!
