On 28 June 1926, Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft and Benz & Cie. merged to form Daimler-Benz AG. The previously independent Mercedes and Benz brands thus became the new joint sales name Mercedes-Benz. The products with the star and laurel wreath quickly earned a reputation for outstanding quality and high technical maturity, which also won over the German leadership in the 1930s. After the war, Daimler-Benz pioneered accident research and passive safety. Today, Mercedes-Benz vehicles are among the most popular classic cars: Of the ten most popular models in Germany, five bear the three-pointed star.

Six-wheeled off-road vehicles with the three-pointed star have not just been around since 2014. Almost 90 years earlier, they were already experimenting with a Mercedes-Benz for rough terrain in Stuttgart. The off-road Benz began as an experiment for the army of the Weimar Republic and ended up as a status symbol of the leadership in the Third Reich. This article tells the story of the Mercedes models G 1 to G 4 and shows them in many historical pictures.
Mercedes-Benz was already thinking about a front-wheel drive passenger car with a transverse engine in the mid-1930s. However, while the more conventional variants of the Mercedes-Benz 130/150/170 were built, only the construction plans of the front-wheel drive transverse-engined 130 exist.
