From 1951 to 1958, Mercedes built the 300 S/Sc as a Cabriolet, Roadster and Coupé. These luxury cars embodied the ultimate in comfort without being unsportsmanlike. In fact, industrialists also liked to drive these vehicles over long distances, which they could cover with high averages. At the end of January 1954, Mercedes-Benz presented two new models that are still among the Stuttgart-based car manufacturer's flagship models today: the 190 SL and the 300 SL road-going sports car. Naturally, the magazine 'hobby' did not miss the opportunity to take a seat behind the wheel as soon as possible. Editor Sponsel even gave the 190 SL a lot of racing potential. The Mercedes-Benz 300 SE was a top European car with a powerful, flexible fuel-injection engine, automatic four-speed gearbox, power steering and four disc brakes with brake assist. It was a pioneering achievement in the field of exterior and interior safety and also a very comfortable, carefully dimensioned and equipped car, which was very easy to handle as a spirited touring car and could also be driven in a sporty manner, according to the Motor Rundschau in its test in 1962.
From 1959 to 1968 (Coupé and Cabriolet until 1971), the Mercedes-Benz W111 model series and its offshoots W110 and W112 were the benchmark in the luxury car class. The saloons, colloquially known as the big and small hatchbacks, impressed - especially in the top versions - with their high level of safety and comfort, impressive looks and self-confident price tags. The Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3, built between 1968 and 1972, was the fastest saloon produced in Germany and could also keep up with fast sports cars. It was created by combining the long-wheelbase version of the 300 SE with the engine from the Mercedes 600. 6.3 liters of displacement and 250 hp in combination with the lighter 300 SEL saloon made it possible to achieve outstanding driving performance without sacrificing comfort. Between 1971 and 1989, Mercedes built the R107 and the coupé variant C107 as the 280 SL to 560 SL and 280 SLC to 500 SLC respectively. Commercially, the model series was a great success and the R107 was the longest-built SL ever; the predecessors W198, W113 and the successors were all built over much shorter periods of time. The last examples of the R107 series became classics from the assembly line and today, together with their older brothers, enjoy a large fan community.
Almost 40 years and several model series lie between the first open-top 300 SL and the last. Technically and conceptually, the W 198 and R 129 series are far apart. But both offered pleasurable open-top driving and superior performance, i.e. the same thing, albeit nowadays at a price that differs by a factor of 50.
