The Mercedes 300 SLR is certainly the racing sports car with the greatest highs and lows in its short career. Two numbers - 10:07:48,000 and 84 - symbolize the greatest success and the worst tragedy surrounding this car. Moss/Jenkinson drove the 1955 Mille Miglia in an incredible 10 hours 7 minutes and 48 seconds - a victory for the ages. In the same year, Levegh's 300 SLR was responsible for the biggest motorsport disaster of all time when it flew over Lance Macklin's Austin-Healey into the spectators at the 24 Hours of Le Mans on June 11, 1955, claiming a total of 84 lives. The accident was not Levegh's fault, as he had to swerve out of the way of Hawthorn's Jaguar, which had pulled into the pits at short notice, and touched the Austin-Healey in the process.
