If you can't decide on a side
There are many people who do not want to steer a car on the "wrong" side under any circumstances. Others take a more pragmatic view and, in fact, both steering wheel positions have their advantages even in right-hand traffic. No wonder there were still big discussions in the 1950s as to whether left-hand or right-hand steering was better. And for decades, Swiss PTT postal workers still steered on the right because it allowed them to leave the car at the side of the road on the safer side.
Well, with the driving school beetle from the USA you would have had the choice, because there was a complete set of pedals and a steering wheel on both sides. So in town you could have steered on the right and for a brisk country road drive with overtaking maneuvers, the left-hand position might have been more practical.
Would such a car still be legal in this country today? Presumably the 1955 VW Beetle, which was auctioned off by RM a week ago (we have documented the resultsin full ), will remain in the USA. The highest bidder paid USD 38,500 for the special Beetle. We hope you enjoy it!
