
The first car to exceed 100 km/h was an electric car, and that was back in 1899. Initially, it seemed as though electric cars might prevail against their gasoline- and steam-powered competitors, but with the advent of the electric starter, the car with the internal combustion engine gained the upper hand. And it retained that dominance well into the new millennium, which isn't to say that there weren't repeated attempts to make electric propulsion a success. However, many remained just experiments. Nevertheless, the prototypes and limited-production cars are interesting, which is why they are given their own dedicated section here.
