The fourth issue of the new Automobilsport magazine also has an interesting cover story: Group C from the perspective of Peter Sauber. In addition to the main topic, the 176-page magazine is packed with many other interesting articles. Of course, this issue also includes an A3 poster.
Sauber Group C 1982 to 1991
The title topic is covered on around 60 pages. The exclusive interview with Peter Sauber, which Robert Weber was able to conduct in Sauber's office in Hinwil, is of course a real treat. The 71-year-old Peter Sauber talks about his beginnings in motorsport, the years leading up to Group C and numerous background stories from his successful career as team boss.
A personal note in passing: these 60 pages alone make the magazine worth buying. But it offers even more...
The history of the Toyota Group 7 sports cars (Part 2)
What began interestingly in the last issue is now being continued! In part 1 of the Toyota 7 story, issue #3 reported on Toyota's first steps in the sports car business and the team's difficult debut season in 1968. Now we take a look at the continuation of the project in its second year and beyond.
With immense resources, Toyota built a completely new vehicle for the 1969 Japanese GP. But the ambitious Japanese brand had much more in store. By 1970, Toyota already had a monstrous, turbocharged Group 7 prototype ready for use, two years before Porsche was to bring its 917/10-Turbo to the racetracks. But the breathtaking Toyota Bi-Turbo, whose Can-Am use had already been approved by the board, was never to be used.
ATS Formula 1 - Gone but not forgotten
30 years ago, in the winter of 1984/85, the racing team that had long been Germany's only bastion in the premier class of motorsport closed its doors. There was little regret in the paddock about the disappearance of ATS after eight seasons in Formula 1. The history books record 89 Grand Prix starts and a modest 7 world championship points for Günter Schmid's team. A meagre haul compared to the high-caliber personnel on Schmid's payroll. A large number of capable drivers such as Keke Rosberg, Gerhard Berger, Jean-Pierre Jarier, Hans-Joachim Stuck and Jochen Mass all took the wheel for ATS. The team also employed first-class employees with Grand Prix victories and titles on their CVs: Jo Ramirez, Gustav Brunner, Alastair Caldwell, Max Flückiger. For the final two years, they even had the most powerful of all BMW turbo engines. So how was it that a team with such promising attributes performed so disappointingly?
This booklet contains part 1 of the entangled ATS story and looks back at the early years of the team and lets some contemporary witnesses have their say.
Historic motorsport
The magazine traditionally also contains articles about current historic motorsport, for example the Automobilsport team reports on the first 24-hour race in the USA, the Daytona Classic (we also reported on this) and summarizes the Planai Classic with beautiful photos.
Diverse columns
The various columns and contributions by well-known people provide a particularly lively atmosphere. In this issue, for example, Rainer Braun looks back 30 years and summarizes special facts in his well-known entertaining style. Eckhard Schimpf's column also recalls the first Formula Vee races 50 years ago.
News
The first ten pages report on all kinds of facts that could be important for motorsport fans. The focus is mainly on news about events, such as the new "Passione Caracciola" event, or information about the entire HSCC racing series.
