It was actually thought in 2015 that the Eifel Rallye Festival could no longer outdo itself, but the crew around Walter Röhrl, Reinhard Klein, Christian Geistdörfer and Peter Schlömer once again managed to put on a rally event that thrilled the audience and participants and provided superlatives.
For the first time, the Audi Group S was seen in motion, and in a very sporty manner, by none other than Walter Röhrl himself, who also drove the few test kilometers 30 years ago.

Weather so-so
If there is any motor racing sport that is not dependent on the weather, then it is certainly rallying. But here, too, spectators (and many of the participants) are certainly happy about nice, dry, warm weather. However, their wishes could not quite be fulfilled. It poured with rain during the shakedown on Thursday, July 21, 2016.
The weather was better on Friday for the two "special stages", and it only started to rain again at the end of the run. On Saturday, the weather was changeable for the final day, with sunshine alternating with light showers. All in all, however, this did not stop the drivers from stepping on the gas or the spectators from joining in the celebrations.
Enthusiastic driving legends
The celebrity drivers who had traveled to Daun were also enthusiastic, especially Walter Röhrl, who drove various Audi and Porsche vehicles and said: "This is just gigantic! I would never have believed that Group B could ever be revived to this extent ...".
Other rally legends such as Miki Biasion (with daughter Bettina in the co-driver's seat of the Lancia Delta S4) and Stig Blomqvist (with wife Asa in the Ford Sierra Cosworth) were also impressed and Harald Demuth beamed: "So many spectators, this event deserves nothing but superlatives!".
Sensational field of vehicles
There were good reasons for the enthusiasm, because the vehicles that Klein and Geistdörfer had brought together hardly need fear comparison.
The cars were divided into the categories "Original", "Slo1" and "Slo2". "Original" refers to historically verifiable original rally cars, which accounted for around 40% of the entries and were particularly well represented among the Group B cars. "Slo1" are replica rally cars that are close to the original, "Slo2" deviate more clearly from the replica original vehicle.
The oldest rally car was from 1958, but the fifties and sixties were comparatively (and intentionally) sparsely represented. Cars from Groups 2 to 4 of the seventies were much more numerous, but the eighties were really well represented, with both Group A and Group B rally cars. There were even a few WRC racing cars to be seen.
Group S
Something very special, however, were the few vehicles that had found their way to the Vulkan-Eifel from Group S, which had never been in action, above all the Audi Group S, which as a mid-engined racer would certainly have had a good chance of winning. In addition, an Opel Kadett 4x4 from Group S, two Toyota 222Ds and a Ford RS 200 in Group S trim, as well as a Skoda 130 LR Evo were also on display.
Unfortunately, not all of these vehicles could be admired on the rally stages, which is understandable given their exclusivity and irreplaceability. The spectators on site were all the happier to see Röhrl thunder past them in a Group S Audi.
The very special crowd favorites
However, it wasn't always the most brutal rally cars that garnered the most applause from the audience.
A Renault 4 (starting number 23), for example, could be just as sure of the spectators' sympathy with its colorful livery as the BMW M3, which was driven by local hero Jürgen Lenarz in the group of cars in front.
Beauty and authenticity more important than speed
Once again, the aim in Daun was not to set the fastest time, which would not be in keeping with the "Slowly sideways" philosophy. Once again, it was all about the visual impression and so it was not the fastest but the most special vehicles that were awarded prizes.
The rally Mazda RX-7 recreated by Yves Loubet won the prize for "Best Replication". The trophy for the best original car went to Wolf-Dieter Ihle for his rebuilt Audi Sport Quattro.
The five rally champions Walter Röhrl, Miki Biasion, Stig Blomqvist, Yves Loubet and Harald Demuth chose the Peugeot 205 T16 of Fernando and Dario Garrido as their favorite car in the "Champion's Choice" award.
Finally, John Davenport received a "Rally Ambassador" award for his activities as a former co-driver, team boss and book author.
What else can come?
After such an enthusiastically received event in 2016 - the previous year's spectator record was easily broken and almost 140 journalists from 21 countries and halfway around the world were accredited - you naturally have to ask yourself what else the organizers can plan to top this year's success? How about a complete guard of all Monte Carlo Rally winners from eight decades? You can be sure that Klein/Geistdörfer's brains are already running hot.
