Great anniversaries should be celebrated! For this reason, the Oldtimer Club Bern organized an anniversary trip on 22 June 2014 to commemorate the biggest Swiss sporting events, the races in Bern's "Bremer".
Large turnout on the original route
Around 90 two- and four-wheeled classic cars took advantage of this unique opportunity and took to the historic track for around an hour in beautiful weather.
With the approval of the authorities, it was possible to drive a circuit, including on the original part of the route that still exists but is closed to motor vehicles, namely the section of forest from Eymatt through the Tenni bend to Glasbrunnen.
The start and finish were located just a few meters from the former pit area.
A large phalanx of Mercedes 300 SLs
If you looked closely, you could see "Don Alfredo" Neubauer in spirit, directing his wonderful Silver Arrows in front of the pits with flags and the REG board. In reality, there was a no less impressive phalanx of ten Mercedes 300 SLs, including several of the rare "Gullwing" cars.
This quickly brought back many memories of the Bern races. Mercedes sports cars recalled the factory outings in 1954, when Rudi Caracciola collided with a tree before the Forsthaus bend and the tree, lying across the track, interrupted the race.
Memories of tragic moments
Opposite the "Jorden pond", the fields passed the spot where Achille Varzi was killed in an accident on July 1, 1948 during training for the "Grand Prix d'Europe". Even today, a picture and cross commemorate the charismatic racing driver.
After an hour, the "honorary race director" Charles Riesen, a former racing car driver, waved the checkered flag.
