11.71 km, that doesn't sound like much. For a circuit, however, that is a considerable length, as most permanent race tracks are closer to five than ten kilometers.
11.71 km from the rider's perspective
After the start-finish passage at the "Solitudering", a sharp left turn of 90 degrees follows immediately, then you rush past the Glemseck, fully accelerating. The following left-hand bend becomes an acceleration straight before the Hedersbach bend forces you into a hard braking maneuver. Then you can accelerate at full speed on the ascending road, now comes the part of the route where every horsepower means extra time. The gentle meandering is over two kilometers long, followed by the next serious braking test with the left-hand bend at Dreispitz.
This is followed by another 3.5 kilometers, which can be driven at full speed by most cars, although the gentle bends become veritable curves at higher speeds. Two hairpin bends make the shadow the next test of courage for late-braking drivers, then after another sharp left-hand bend in the shadow, the route leads onto a 3.5-kilometer serpentine section that is said to have once been driven full or almost full by Grand Prix drivers. However, you had to grit your teeth, because not only are the bends in the Mahdental not to be sneezed at, but they also force you to take an ideal line that takes all the twists and turns into account. Because there are hardly any straights on the way back to the finish, one bend follows the next.
Jim Clark averaged almost 180 km/h on this circuit in the 1960s, which is almost unbelievable when you consider that the cars were equipped with relatively small engines and did not even have the power of a modern luxury diesel station wagon.
Interrupted history
Many memories come flooding back when you get behind the wheel to conquer the tricky and "super-fast" track. However, you are quickly awakened from any daydreams, as the signs to the left and right of the road demanding a speed limit of 50 km/h due to road damage give you pause for thought. The traffic circle in the shadowy ground would probably have slowed Jim Clark down a lot almost 50 years ago, as would the numerous road narrowings that were installed for safety reasons.
But as soon as you reach the still original intermediate sections, e.g. in "Elend" or in Mahdental, these interventions are forgotten again and you eagerly search for the right apex and braking point.
An average speed of almost 180 km/h would probably be rather illusory today, even for the most modern racing cars, not least because a pace car slowed down at the front on the hot summer weekend in July.
But the organization was probably wise not to allow absolute excesses of speed to occur, as it became clear in 2013 that it is difficult to secure a natural race track that is over eleven kilometers long. And run-off areas were not an issue in the sixties anyway, and of course they have not come about by themselves since then. The fact that the bumps in the road caused some pre-war cars to bounce and some post-war formula cars to jump demonstrated the importance of speed-dampening measures.

These were demonstration rides and not races, emphasized Johannes Hübner, who, as always, drew on a wealth of expertise and an almost endless pool of anecdotes.
Lots of enthusiasm
The Swabian spoke "Solidüüd" on the microphone and of course meant Solitude, and immediately proposed it as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And Mayor Schuler of Leonberg was equally enthusiastic about the mobile history lesson on offer and announced that there would certainly be another Solitude Revival in two years' time.
The participants will certainly return, as there were hardly any dissatisfied faces, despite the shortened stints. Instead of the planned 12 laps, most drivers only completed 10, but these 115 km were more than enough for most of the not-so-young drivers and the mechanics also gratefully accepted the reduction in distance, as the oil and water thermometers quickly indicated overheating at high outside temperatures, especially when there were unplanned waiting times.
Small and fixable breakdowns
While the vehicle demonstration and vehicle acceptance on Friday largely went according to plan, two events caused major delays on Saturday. Firstly, there was a rear-end collision involving participants on arrival, and then the requirements of the external route inspection had to be met with additional safety posts. In no time at all, 1.5 hours were lost.

By shortening the individual runs, it was possible to compensate for these time losses over the course of the day, only to record further delays with wedding runs.
Celebrated original Solitude vehicles
The field of over 120 cars (and another 120 motorcycles and sidecars) was impressive. There were a number of racing cars on the Solitude ring that had already breathed Solitude air 50 or more years ago.
Examples include the Brabham BT3 Climax from 1963, the Lotus 24 Climax from 1963, the Brabham BT16 Formula 2 from 1965, the Brabham BT6 Formula Junior from 1963 and the Poggi Fiat Formula Junior from 1959. All of these single-seaters competed in the solo races in the 1950s and 1960s. In 2013, they were honored with a certificate presented by Hans Herrmann.
The Marcos Fastback GT from 1963, the Alfa Romeo Giulietta SVZ from 1959 and the Ferrari 275 GTB from 1965, once driven by Siegfried Zwimpfer and Pierre Sudan and delivered by Peter Monteverdi, also had original Solitude race kilometers.
Traditions and legends
But there were also many trouvailles to be discovered in the rest of the field, with the many formula cars in particular providing an excellent illustration of the technical developments and trends of the sixties. In the sports car and GT fields, too, there were many a car to be seen that made the 30,000 or so spectators (organization estimate) frown.
Finally, the particularly rich pre-war field was reminiscent of the beginnings of Solitude, when the races were still held as hill climbs (West-Bahnhof-Schloss Solitude). The Solitude race track finally celebrates its 110th birthday in 2013.
The first hill climb races were held in 1903. By 1924, there were a total of seven such hillclimbs and the name 'Solitude Race' was popularly established.
From 1925 onwards, the event was extended to a 22-kilometer circuit around the castle. From 1935, part of it formed the classic Solitude-Ring, on which motorcycle world championships and Formula 1 races were held after the Second World War.
After 1965, annual racing was discontinued for safety reasons.
Since 2003, the Solitude Revival has been reviving memories of earlier motorsport times around the castle.
With an extended paddock
While the participants had complained about the cramped paddock in 2011, they were able to make the most of it in 2013. Thanks to the support of the ADAC, a huge area was now available as the southern paddock. However, this also meant that the vehicles were accommodated in three different locations: the motorcycles at the Glemseck and Seehaus, the formula cars behind the start-finish straight and the other competing vehicles in the infield of the Solitude Ring. This resulted in a lot of walking, especially for participants who were in different groups at the start. And the spectators also had to cover longer distances if they wanted to see all the vehicles.
Some sports and racing cars that some would have liked to see back on the Solitaire Ring were unfortunately missing anyway, such as the BMW 700, the Borgward RS or the AWE racing cars from the 1950s. So there is still some potential for the next event. Perhaps it will be possible to present one of the races of that time, when Fritz Fend and his FMR 500 GT, known as the "Tiger", prevailed against a whole field of NSU Print 30s. A few BMW 700s could also give the event an additional accent.
Roland Asch and the Capri mudguard
At the Solitude Revival, however, the focus was not only on the old cars, but also on the former racing drivers.

Hans Herrmann, Eberhard Mahle, Peter Falk, Herbert Linge and others got back into the racing cars of yesteryear, were available for discussions and interviews and enjoyed reminiscing about the good old Solitude days.

Roland Asch also paid a visit to the Revival. He inspected two six-cylinder Capri touring cars with great interest and shared his wealth of Ford tuning experience. He even has spare parts for the old Capris, for example, he recently found a widened mudguard for the successful coupé from the late sixties in his warehouse, reported the well-known touring car racing driver Asch mischievously.
Screws and patches
Four laps in a row put more strain on the ageing mechanics of the old racing cars than you might think.
However, some participants didn't even manage one lap, such as the DKW Monza, because the owner couldn't swap the warm-up plugs with the racing plugs under stress and the electrodes of the mounted spark plugs burned out completely on the first steep section.
At least the damage could be repaired on an outpatient basis and the Monza remained operational. It fared better than other participants, whose gearbox, ignition or the entire engine gave up the ghost and went out in a plume of smoke.
Calm after the storm
On Sunday evening, calm returned to the seemingly rural area around the Solitudering. The twittering of birds regained the upper hand and will no longer be drowned out by the whine of compressors and screeching of engines for the next two years. Some will be happy about this, but the fans will hardly be able to wait until the next Solitude Revival.
