Of course, the organizers of Lignières Historique do not want to be compared to Goodwood, but with real races, an auction, a Concours d'Elégance and even a drive-in cinema, the enterprising team around Tony Staub has put together a diverse classic car festival that is unparalleled in Switzerland, which was impressively underscored by the 9,000 spectators.
The first event in 2013 had already shown that they meant business, and in 2014 the event was organized on a larger scale. It goes without saying that the details can still be fine-tuned.
The multiple Le Mans winner in the Formula Ford
Circuit races have in principle been banned in Switzerland since the major accident at Le Mans in the 1950s. The fact that an exception is possible in Lignières thanks to the generous support of the TCS (Touring Club of Switzerland - the Lignières track is now part of a TCS traffic safety center) is almost a sensation. And the fact that Marcel Fässler is taking part in one of these races in a Formula Ford is also something very special.
In fact, multiple Le Mans winner and former DTM racing driver Marcel Fässler strapped himself into a 1992 Van Diemen Formula Ford and set the fastest time in his class in practice.
The racing driver, who gained his first automotive experience many years ago in a Formula Ford in Lignières, also left nothing to be desired in the race.
For a short time, it even looked as if he would cross the finish line as the winner. The Daren Mk 3 from 1971, which had at least twice as much power, could have jeopardized this. In the end, Fässler crossed the finish line in second place overall, but with a clear gap to the next Formula Ford.
Jürg Tobler also did well in the oldest car in the field, a Lola Mk 1 from 1960.
GT versus touring car
In the second race field, Gran Turismo vehicles competed against touring cars. Pole-setter Walter Pauli showed in the race that there was no way around him and his Alpine A110 1300S.
Second place went to the fast Michael Erlich, who only just had to give way to Hans Siegrist's Group 4 Alpine at the start in his 1965 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GTA. He quickly regained his second place and the three of them crossed the finish line.
It was a shame that only five cars started the race, as it would certainly have been exciting to see how the Mini Cooper S or the Lotus Elan would have fared in the field. As it was, battles for position were largely in short supply and one would have liked to see a race based on the old handicap formula that was once devised for the Lignières circuit.
At this point, we would like to pay tribute to the motorcyclists and team riders. Not only did they provide attractive racing and demo fields, they also showed that exciting racing is possible on the short and narrow Lignières circuit, especially with two and three-wheelers.
50 years of Gordini
The majority of the racing cars were in demonstration mode, including the four Renault R8 Gordini, which, together with an R8, drew applause from the audience to mark the 50th anniversary of this model.
In 1964, the first version with 1108 cm3 and 86 hp was launched on the market, recognizable by its blue paintwork with white stripes. In 1967, it was upgraded to 88 hp from 1254 cm3.
For many years, the Gordinis ensured good results on racing and rally tracks and spectacular drifts thanks to the rear engine.
50 years of the Fiat-Abarth 695
The Abarth 695 Biposto was also presented 50 years ago. Abarth is now bringing it back to life.
In Lignières, the 190 hp front-wheel drive car competed as a pace car and the driver had to work hard not to be crowded out by the demonstration field of Abarth vehicles, which included not only the popular midget 1000 TC and derivatives but also genuine sports prototypes such as the Abarth 3000 V8 from 1970 or the two-liter from 1971. A special YouTube channel with live sequences was even set up for those interested on the Internet!
Other demonstration fields featured beautiful parades of pre-war cars, post-war GTs, touring cars, monoposti and sports prototypes.
The revived Sauber C5
The freshly restored Sauber C5 from 1976 provided a special splash of color in Lignières, not least because of its green Artos paintwork, the color with which the car was also used in Swiss hill climb races almost 40 years ago. Harry Blumer finished fifth in the Swiss championship with chassis 76.C05.001.
The car then competed in Le Mans in 1977, but retired. Max F. Welti used the car in the Swiss championship in 1977 and 1978. Even then, the C5 attracted attention with its aerodynamic and attractive shape.
The Concours on the beautiful Lake Neuchâtel
Elegance was also in demand in Neuchâtel, where a Concours d'Elégance was organized in a prime location and in almost dry weather as part of the Lignières Historique.
A 1925 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost was named Best of Show, while the title of "Best of Concours" went to a 1912 Aries S5 C Tourer that is over a hundred years old.
The category winners were a Bentley Roadster from 1937, a Mercedes Benz Nürburg 500 from 1931, an MG L Type Magna from around 1933, a Chevrolet Corvette C1 from 1960, an Alvis Graber Special from 1962 and an Abarth-Simca Due Mila from 1965.
Open-air cinema and auction slightly undercooked
The organizers had also come up with something for the evening. On Friday, visitors could watch the movie "Rush" about the duel between James Hunt and Niki Lauda in the open-air cinema, while on Saturday they could bid for cars at an open-air auction. However, both evening events suffered from the very cool weather. As a result, the auction in particular did not generate the necessary buying frenzy and only a few of the vehicles were sold.
Overall, however, the weather proved to be merciful, apart from the heavy rainfall on Friday, which almost flooded the festival grounds. Sunday in particular was very friendly. The public certainly took the opportunity to get up close and personal with old racing cars. On Sunday afternoon, the circuit was well attended, there was hardly a permitted place where someone wasn't standing and watching the action on the short and winding track - the long version was used.
And then there was ....
In order to look beyond the past, a race with modern electric vehicles, the 1st Swiss Energy Grand Prix, was also held as part of the Lignières Historique. Using a handicap formula similar to that used in Lignières in the past, the individual vehicles were put on the track for the 100-lap race. In the end, the vehicle with the biggest gap at the start, the Tesla S, won.
Only time will tell whether a similar number of spectators will make the pilgrimage to Lignières in 50 years' time to watch silent vintage electric cars, as was the case on the weekend of August 16/17, 2014.
For the next edition of the Lignières Historique, we hope that the organizers and the TCS, who are hosting the event and actively supporting it, will have even denser and more exciting vehicle fields, but above all, better-crewed racing fields. There must be a few more licensed racing drivers in Switzerland who can revive the old days on the Lignières racetrack with suitable GT or touring cars ...
