As usual, Gooding is closing the Pebble Beach auction week and will be offering 129 cars worth almost USD 150 million (EUR 133 million, CHF 140 million) on August 15 and 16, 2015. On average, the hammer is expected to fall at around USD 1.1 million; five-figure vehicles can be counted on one hand, with the majority in the upper six-figure range.
With 17 pre-war vehicles and 12 neo-classics (after 1995), cars from the post-war period (28x), the sixties (42x) and the seventies (20x) dominate at Gooding.
Large Ferrari selection
The largest brand contingent at Gooding is also from Ferrari with 29 sports and racing cars, more than a fifth in total. This is followed by Porsche with 22 lots and Mercedes-Benz with 12. All other manufacturers are represented no more than five times, with a total of 36 brands.
In addition to the expected 365 GTB/4 Daytona or Dino 206/246 GT/GTS models, the large Ferrari selection also includes some rare rarities from Maranello, such as the Ferrari 500 Superfast from 1965, a Ferrari 410 Superamerica Series II from 1957 and the particularly valuable Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta Speciale from 1962 with a stunning Bertone body.Bertone bodywork, which was estimated at USD 14 to 16 million and is thus only surpassed by the 250 GT SWB California Spider from 1961, whose estimate was set at USD 16 to 18 million.
Almost half of the expected total turnover is expected to come from the 29 Ferrari cars, and this already includes the restoration object of a Ferrari 250 GTE Series 1 from 1961, which is also expected to fetch a respectable USD 350,000 to 450,000.
Mainly super classics
In general, Gooding's European-dominated offering consists almost exclusively of super classics. These include the Aston Martin DB 4 and DB5, the BMW M1, the Bentley R-Type Continental Fastback, a selection of Jaguar E-Types and XKs, a Lamborghini Countach, two Maserati Ghibli, four Mercedes-Benz 300 SLs, three Porsche 911 Carrera RSs and two Shelby Cobras 289.
Up-and-coming classics can also be found on the lot list, such as four Porsche 930 Turbo and even a Porsche 964 Turbo 3.6.
Valuable Porsche racing cars
The above-average selection of Porsche racing cars is something special.
A Porsche RS 60 from 1960 (estimated value USD ,5.5 to 7 million), a Porsche 904 Carrera GTS from 1964 (USD 2.25 to 2.75 million), one of the last built Porsche 906E Carrera 6 from 1967 with American racing history (chassis 906-159, USD1.6 to 2 million) and a Porsche 956 Group C from 1982, for which USD 7 to 9 million is expected, will be offered.which is expected to fetch USD 7 to 9 million, along with several other 911-based racing sports cars.
But the racing cars of the competition from Maranello are also considered valuable, as the Ferrari Dino 206 S Spider from 1966 with an estimated value of USD 2.6 to 3.4 million proves.
American specialties
American brands are in the minority, although four Chevrolet Corvettes did make it onto the lot list. Other cars from Buick, Cadillac and Packard round off the range of better-known brands, but there are also rare rarities up for auction, such as the 1957 Dual-Ghia (USD 275,000 to 350'000), an unrestored but well-preserved Hudson Italia without engine/transmission from 1955 in need of complete restoration (USD 100,000 to 125,000) and a Monoposto Watson Indianapolis Roadster from 1963 (USD 400,000 to 500,000).
The 1947 Ford V8 Superdeluxe station wagon with its pretty wooden body is of course also typically American and is asking USD 140,000 to 180,000.
Not to be found every day
Although Gooding focuses on well-known and widely tradable classics, the bidding audience at Pebble Beach will also see some specialties. According to the auction house, the Group B road version of the 1986 Ford RS 200 is worth around USD 500,000 to 700,000 and a super-rare 1956 Fiat Eden Roc, a kind of luxury beach car in sheet metal, teak and mahogany, which was built just twice by Pinin Farina, is even listed without an estimated value. Perhaps because Agnelli had one.
Bargain?
None of the cars on offer looks like a real bargain in terms of their estimated value, so we will see on August 15 and 16, 2015 whether the approximately 36% lots offered without a reserve price offer a second chance. After all, even the million-dollar Ferrari 275 GTB/4 from 1967 (lot 029) is being offered without a reserve, so the result will be interesting to see.
